“I like to think that there is no beauty lost in the way we communicate today. An emotion expressed through a letter is just the same if it’s expressed in an email so it’s up to us to find that emotion, to draw it out and create new kinds of beauty within the way we communicate today.” - Peter Charles Drew, 2009
Born in Adelaide in 1983, Peter Drew has been practicing as an artist since 2005. Having completed studies in Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Adelaide, Drew’s work employs his knowledge of cognitive science to create works of art that engage with and challenge the direction of contemporary life.
Woking predominately with acrylics on canvas, Drew’s earlier work shows is informed by his studies as it endeavours to parody science and subvert the authority of medical knowledge. His earlier work also deals with socio-political concerns relating to his travels in Tibet and environmental issues. However, his more recent work is concerned primarily with exploring a digital aesthetic.
“The Internet is more than a tool for communication, it’s a means of expression. It’s a strange kind of stage that keeps growing as each member of the audience realizes that they are as much a part of the performance as anyone else. In this sense, we each personalise an online image through which we can express that which cannot otherwise be shown.” - Peter Charles Drew, 2009
